PESSOA EM MIM
The show PESSOA EM MIM has its artistic direction signed by Joana Reais who was commissioned by Ciclo Internacional Fernando Pessoa (International Festival of Fernando Pessoa) and, together with the Brazilian guitarist and composer Beto Chedid, elaborated a theater-musical dramaturgy based on the work of Fernando Pessoa – the greatest Portuguese poet of the 20th century. This is a show of original songs and tributes to great Portuguese songwriters, composed exclusively with Fernando Pessoa’s poems. PESSOA EM MIM tries to translate into musical language the multifaceted universe, sometimes hard, other times sweet, sometimes pessimistic, other times believer in sensations as the basis of all art, sometimes metaphysical, other times just looking for the pleasure of things, that of the greatest Portuguese poet of the 20th century. In his heteronyms, but especially in Fernando Pessoa’s poetry which is endowed with a new musicality, an expressive use of adjectives, an emotive punctuation and a great use of comparisons, metaphors and oxymorons (various paradoxes) – after all, we’re talking about of one of the protagonists of Portuguese Modernism (along with José de Almada Negreiros or Santa-Rita Pintor).
Although extremely expressive, Pessoa’s language is simple and faithful to the Lusitanian poetic tradition (often not far from the popular quatrain) hence this show is around a voice. However, its focus is neither a large instrumentation nor an elaborate scenario, but that of emotion. The pure emotion of a thousand words. The interpretation of a singer-actress-performer who navigates between truths and pretenses, consciences and delusions, dreams and realities.
